Regensburg and the Danube, by Minibus
Regensburg's medieval old town is a UNESCO site best seen on foot, and the Danube around it hides a temple, an abbey and a gorge. A minibus covers the gaps, so your group spends the day looking rather than waiting.
Arrive over the Stone Bridge
The city's recommended drop-off is the coach stop Stadtamhof, Am Protzenweiher. A vehicle can stand there for up to 20 minutes, ample time for everyone to climb out, and then your group strolls over the Steinerne Brücke into the old town towards the Dom St. Peter.
It is a lovely way in, and it means the old town needs no driving at all. Agree the return time at Stadtamhof before everyone scatters into the lanes.

Sticker and parking
The old town between the Alleengürtel and the Danube is a low-emission zone. You need a green sticker to drive or park there, with German and foreign number plates alike, so check before you travel.
While you explore, the driver waits at the free Bäckergasse coach park, just north of the Europakanal and signposted from Stadtamhof, which is only a short walk away. The other free option is out east by the Donau-Arena.

Up and down the Danube
Walhalla, the Greek-style hall of fame King Ludwig I built above Donaustauf, is about 25 minutes away. Upstream, the Befreiungshalle crowns the Michelsberg above Kelheim, and Weltenburg Abbey sits at the Danube Gorge, about 40 minutes from the city.
All three fit into one unhurried day with lunch in between, a good plan for a club outing or a family spanning three generations.
Further afield
Straubing lies just over half an hour downriver, Landshut under an hour to the south, and Passau roughly 80 minutes away. Nuremberg and Munich each take a good hour and a quarter or more, and Bamberg nearer an hour and three quarters.
A day in Prague means almost three hours' driving in each direction. That is a long day on the road, so treat it as an overnight trip or allow generous breaks for the driver.
Questions travellers ask
Which airport suits Regensburg?
Munich and Nuremberg are almost equally far: 105 km (about 1 h 10 min) and 111 km (a little longer) respectively.
Can the minibus drop us at the cathedral?
Not directly. The recommended stop is Stadtamhof, and from there the cathedral is a walk over the Stone Bridge.
Can we combine Walhalla and Weltenburg in one day?
Yes. Both lie on the Danube within about 40 minutes of the city, with the Befreiungshalle near Kelheim on the way.
