Coach & Minibus Hire in Germany

Hamburg Airport: a minibus to the Alster, the harbour or the Baltic

Hamburg’s airport sits only a short drive from the Rathaus and is well signed for buses. Two coach areas sit as near to the terminals as the layout allows, so the walk from baggage reclaim to your seat stays short.

Two terminals, two coach areas

Look for the signs 'Reisebusse T1' or 'Reisebusse T2': the driver heads for whichever matches your arrival terminal, so send the terminal with your flight number. Neither has a height limit. That matters, because the multi-storey car parks stop at 2.00 m and a high-roof minibus will not fit inside.

If your party arrives on two flights at different terminals, tell us about both. The pickup can be split between them or timed for the later landing.

Registered operators can come closer

A bus company that has signed up with the airport beforehand and carries its coach park card gets one more option: a reserved zone directly outside the terminals at arrivals level, reached by the Transfer Parken lane. Whether that applies to your pickup depends on the operator; either way, the meeting place is confirmed before you travel.

Good to know: Hamburg Airport

  • Kiel (Ostseekai cruise terminal) is about 92 km by road, about 1 h in light traffic.
  • Lübeck (Holstentor) is about 70 km by road, about 55 min in light traffic.
  • The Terminal 1 baggage system is being renewed step by step from November 2026 to May 2029; Terminal 2's system keeps running.
  • Taxi ranks are in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 on the arrivals level.
  • A coach line links the airport with Neumünster and Kiel, useful for cruise passengers using the Kiel cruise berths.
  • Public buses 274, 292, X95 and night bus 606 leave from Terminal 1, level 0 (arrivals).
  • S-Bahn line S1 runs from the airport station, reached from both terminals by lifts and escalators, to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof every 10 minutes in about 25 minutes; since 20 August 2026 extra trains give a train every 5 minutes in the weekday peak.

Into Hamburg

Expect 20–25 minutes to the Rathaus when traffic is light, over roughly 11 km. Hamburg has no low-emission zone, and the old diesel bans in Altona ended in 2023, so no sticker is needed for the drive to a hotel by the Alster or in HafenCity.

Cruise passengers and day trips

Joining a ship in Kiel? Kiel’s Ostseekai terminal is some 92 km up the motorway, about an hour, and a scheduled coach line also runs from the airport to Neumünster and Kiel. For a family with a pile of cruise luggage, a minibus straight to the quay is the simpler option.

Lübeck is closer: around 70 km to the Holstentor, a little under an hour. That leaves a first afternoon in the old town before you check in.

Questions travellers ask

How quick is the S-Bahn into town?

Line S1 needs around 25 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof and runs every 10 minutes, more often in the weekday rush. Both terminals reach the station by lift and escalator.

Can we be dropped at the kerb when we fly home?

The Kiss & Fly lane on the departures level is for cars and gives 10 free minutes. Larger vehicles set down at the coach areas, which are placed as near to the terminals as possible.

Are the coach areas free to use?

No, they charge for use and the driver pays before leaving. Your quote sets out how parking and any waiting are covered.
