Neuschwanstein Without the Rush: Füssen by Minibus
Neuschwanstein is the highlight of many trips to Bavaria, and it rewards careful planning. With a minibus and driver, your group arrives in good time, keeps its bags safe and leaves when it suits you.
Tickets first, everything else after
Nobody wanders round Neuschwanstein alone: every visit is a guided tour of some 30 minutes at a set time, and places are limited. You can buy only online through the official shop or in person in Hohenschwangau, at the ticket centre on the Alpseestraße (number 12). The castle sells none.
What is sold on the spot covers that day alone, and in the busy months it is gone early, so a group should reserve online well in advance. Miss your start and the tour leaves without you. The ticket centre therefore suggests reaching Hohenschwangau an hour and a half to two hours ahead of your slot.

Where the vehicle goes in Hohenschwangau
For coaches, the only car parks are P1 and P4 (the other two are meant for cars and camper vans). Stopping is banned along the whole street, the ticket centre forecourt included, so nobody is dropped at the door, and no vehicle may drive up to the castles.
Leave luggage, prams and baby carriers in the minibus, because none may go into the castle.

Favourite stops in Füssen
- Wieskirche — Rococo pilgrimage church near Steingaden, a UNESCO World Heritage site
- Forggensee boat trips — Lake cruises from the Füssen boat harbour (coach park P7)

- Marienbrücke — Bridge over the Pöllat gorge with the classic view of Neuschwanstein, near the top stop of the shuttle bus

- Schloss Neuschwanstein — King Ludwig II's castle above Hohenschwangau, seen only on a guided tour of about 30 minutes at a fixed entry time; part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "The Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria" since 2025

Walk, shuttle or carriage
Walking up is a steep 1.5 km, half an hour to 40 minutes. Or take the shuttle from P4 by the Alpsee, which goes about every 20 minutes to a viewpoint near the Marienbrücke; from there it is some 500 m, steeply down, to the castle. The horse-drawn carriages stop below it instead, so the last 450 m or so climb uphill.
Neither shuttle nor carriage can be reserved. The shuttle does not run on snowy or icy roads, nor on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, so in winter plan for the walk.
Füssen, the lakes and the Wieskirche
Much of Füssen's old town is pedestrian, and vehicles heavier than 7.5 t are kept out. The Morisse coach park, P3, is about five minutes on foot; the Festplatz, P1, is the largest, and P7 at the boat harbour serves the Forggensee cruises.
The Wieskirche, a rococo pilgrimage church, is about 30 minutes away and pairs well with the castles. The quickest road to Garmisch-Partenkirchen runs through Austria; keeping to German roads via Oberammergau means about 67 km, around 1 h 10 min.
Questions travellers ask
Can we visit Neuschwanstein on a day trip from Munich?
Yes, though the round trip is about 260 km. EU rules cap a driver's day at 9 hours behind the wheel, or 10 on two days a week, and require a pause of 45 minutes or more once 4.5 hours are driven, so keep the timetable relaxed.
Can we buy castle tickets when we arrive?
Only at the Ticket-Center in Hohenschwangau village, for the same day, and they often sell out. Booking online before the trip is the safer plan; nothing is sold at the castle itself.
Which airport is closest to Füssen?
Memmingen, which is 83 km away, under an hour by road. Munich Airport is about 161 km away.
Is there a low-emission zone?
No. Füssen, Schwangau and Hohenschwangau have none.
