Coach & Minibus Hire in Germany

From Munich Airport to the mountains, the lakes or the city

Munich’s airport is a long way out, close to Freising and Erding and some 39 km by road from Marienplatz, so the transfer is a proper drive rather than a hop. For families and small groups bound for the Alps or the castles, a minibus that starts at arrivals spares you a change of trains with all the luggage.

Meeting your driver after landing

Buses on commercial trips get barrier-controlled bays of their own outside both terminals. Ten minutes there cost nothing, twice a day, and the limit is 48 hours; for a long wait, such as a badly delayed flight, coaches are sent on to P53 at the Besucherpark.

The airport names no meeting point for groups inside the terminal, so where you find your driver and where the minibus waits are agreed with the operator when you book. The kerbside lanes are only for quick drop-offs and pickups, so gather everyone and every bag inside first.

Height limits in the car parks

Nothing taller than 2.00 m gets into Munich's multi-storey car parks. The only car park for taller vehicles, Economy Parking North P50, has 26 marked spaces for vehicles over 2.10 m high and up to 8 m long. That suits many minibuses but not a full-size coach.

Flights outside the Schengen area now use the new Terminal 1 Pier, so check which terminal your booking names.

Terminals at a glance

  • Munich Airport Center (MAC), between the two terminals
  • Terminal 2 (with its satellite building)
  • Terminal 1 (with the Terminal 1 Pier for non-Schengen flights, in operation since 21 April 2026)

Good to know: Munich Airport

  • Salzburg (Austria) is about 185 km by road, about 2 h in light traffic.
  • Nürnberg is about 160 km by road, about 1 h 45 min in light traffic.
  • Regensburg is about 105 km by road, about 1 h 15 min in light traffic.
  • Garmisch-Partenkirchen is about 135 km by road, about 1 h 35 min in light traffic.
  • Füssen and the castles at Hohenschwangau (Neuschwanstein) are about 165 km by road, about 2 h in light traffic.
  • The new Terminal 1 Pier, for non-Schengen flights, opened officially on 13 April 2026 and has handled flights since 21 April 2026; a new mobility centre for rental cars is under construction south of the Munich Airport Center, due in 2028.
  • An airport bus runs every 20 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof via Schwabing (Nordfriedhof) in about 35 minutes, stopping at Terminal 1 arrivals, the Munich Airport Center bus station and Terminal 2 arrivals.
  • There is no long-distance (ICE) station at the airport. The Airport Express regional train (ÜFEX) runs from Flughafen München via Freising to Moosburg, Landshut, Regensburg and Nürnberg; regional trains from Freising serve Landshut, Regensburg and Passau.
  • S-Bahn lines S1 (via Moosach) and S8 (via Ostbahnhof) serve the station Flughafen München, between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and the station Besucherpark; together they give a train every 10 minutes and take about 40 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof. S8 also runs at night.
  • The airport is about 39 km north-east of the city centre, near Freising and Erding; allow for the long road transfer.

Landing day: Neuschwanstein, Garmisch or Salzburg?

Füssen and the castles at Hohenschwangau are about 165 km by road, around two hours in light traffic. Garmisch-Partenkirchen comes sooner, at 135 km or so and about an hour and 35 minutes, and Salzburg, across the border in Austria, about 185 km.

After a long-haul flight that adds up to a full day. Neuschwanstein tickets are timed and sold online or at the ticket centre in Hohenschwangau, never at the castle itself, so most families are happier checking in first and seeing the castle the next morning. Long days also bring the driver’s legal hours into the plan.

If you are staying in Munich

Marienplatz is about 40 minutes away when the roads are quiet, and longer at peak times. The city has a low-emission zone that includes the Mittlerer Ring, and coaches cannot park in the old town: they set down and pick up at short-stay zones on the Altstadtring. Your hotel address tells the driver where the nearest permitted stop is.

Questions travellers ask

Is the S-Bahn a good alternative?

Two S-Bahn lines, S1 and S8, share the route so that a train leaves roughly every ten minutes, and the ride to the Hauptbahnhof takes some 40 minutes. ICE trains skip the airport. With children, skis or a mountain of baggage, a minibus to the door is the calmer choice.

Can we go straight to Regensburg or Nuremberg?

Yes. Regensburg is about 105 km by road from the airport, around 1 h 15 min in light traffic, and Nuremberg about 160 km, around 1 h 45 min.

How do we choose between a car and a minibus?

A car with driver carries up to eight passengers. From nine people you need a minibus, and ski bags or prams can push a smaller group up a size too.
