The Sprinter-style minibus: comfort for a small group

High roof, roomy seats and a luggage area at the back: the Sprinter-style minibus suits families on holiday, small company groups and anyone who wants a little more space than a standard Kleinbus.

Car or bus, depending on the seats

Configured for up to eight passengers, it is a car with driver and runs under the Mietwagen rules. Add seats and it becomes a bus, driven by someone holding class D1.

Once it has over nine seats, counting the driver, a tachograph is fitted too, and the EU drivers' hours apply in full. Your request does not need to sort this out: give the number of people and the operator chooses the right layout.

Inside the vehicle

  • In ice, snow or slush every motor vehicle must have winter tyres (situational winter-tyre rule); for buses, winter tyres are required at least on the permanently driven axles and the front steering axles
  • Every vehicle entering a German low-emission zone (Umweltzone) needs the green sticker (grüne Plakette), including foreign-registered vehicles; the sticker is valid in every Umweltzone in Germany
  • With more than nine seats including the driver, it needs a tachograph and follows the EU drivers' hours rules
  • With up to eight passengers it counts as a car with driver (Mietwagen); with more seats it counts as a bus and the driver needs category D1

Stickers and winter

Every vehicle entering a German Umweltzone needs the green sticker, foreign-registered ones included. One sticker is valid in every zone in the country.

In ice, snow or slush, winter tyres are compulsory, whatever the date. On buses they are needed at least on the axles that drive the vehicle and on the front steering axles, which matters on Alpine and Black Forest roads.

Where it works well

Airport pick-ups for a family with skis, a board meeting at a lakeside hotel, a wine tour along the Rheingau: the Sprinter-style minibus is roomy without feeling like a bus.

It also suits a group of friends heading for the Zugspitze, a hen or stag weekend, or a Christmas market. The driver sets everyone down close to the entrance, then waits or comes back at the agreed time.

Questions travellers ask

How much luggage fits?

The area behind the last row takes a suitcase each for a full load; for ski bags or golf clubs, leave seats free or ask for a larger vehicle.

Is it suitable for business guests?

Yes. It is a popular choice for executive airport runs and small corporate groups.

Can it cross into Austria?

Day trips into Austria are possible; the operator checks the rules there for the date.

Sprinter or standard minibus?

Both seat a similar number. Choose the Sprinter-style vehicle when standing headroom and more legroom matter.
