Nuremberg Airport: a short hop to the old town, an easy start to Franconia

Nuremberg Airport is compact and close in: the Hauptmarkt is about 8 km away, around 15 minutes in light traffic. One terminal, with two departure halls and an arrivals hall, makes it hard to get lost.

Meeting in the arrivals hall

Nuremberg names no coach pick-up point, coach park or group meeting point. Groups are normally welcomed in the arrivals hall and walk with the driver to the vehicle on the terminal forecourt; both the meeting place and the stopping spot are arranged with the operator ahead of your flight.

The Kiss & Fly zone on the forecourt allows 8 free minutes. The multi-storey car parks admit nothing over 2.10 m, and the parking team wants a word beforehand about anything that tall or past 5 m in length, so a minibus pickup is set up ahead rather than improvised.

Into Nuremberg

Nuremberg has no low-emission zone. Coaches cannot enter the walled Altstadt, though, so for a hotel inside the walls the vehicle stops at the nearest permitted point and you walk the last stretch with your cases.

Good to know: Nuremberg Airport

  • Bamberg is about 59 km by road, about 50 min in light traffic.
  • Regensburg is about 111 km by road, about 1 h 15 min in light traffic.
  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber is about 82 km by road, about 1 h 20 min in light traffic.
  • The runway closes on 12 nights in April and May 2027 for maintenance, with no flights on those nights.
  • Road works at a city junction (Cramer-Klett-Straße / Gießereistraße / Wöhrder Hauptstraße) until about 20 November 2026 put a signed detour on the route between the city and the airport.
  • Taxis are available at the airport around the clock.
  • There is no main-line railway station at the airport; ICE trains stop at Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof.
  • Bus lines 30, 33 and night bus N12 stop on the terminal forecourt.
  • U-Bahn line U2 links the airport directly with Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes; the station is directly on the terminal forecourt. Only every second U2 train runs through to the airport.

Franconia from your doorstep

This is fine country for a minibus. From the airport it is about 59 km to Bamberg (around 50 minutes), about 82 km to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a highlight of the Romantic Road (around 1 h 20 min), and about 111 km to Regensburg on the Danube (around 1 h 15 min).

In Advent, many visitors come for the Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt. The coach drop-off arrangements for the market are set each year, and the current plan is confirmed when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a railway station at the airport?

No main-line station. The U2 underground runs from the forecourt to the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes, where the ICE trains stop, though only every second U2 goes through to the airport.

We are staying in Rothenburg. Does flying into Nuremberg make sense?

Very much so: about 82 km by road. Coaches cannot drive into Rothenburg’s old town to drop day visitors, and the hotel-guest arrangement does not apply during the Christmas market, so ask about your hotel when you book.

Can a full-size coach collect a bigger group?

Yes. As the airport publishes no coach rules, the operator settles where the coach stops before you arrive, and you walk out from the arrivals hall together.

Are taxis available as a back-up?

Taxis wait at the airport at all hours, and city buses 30 and 33 stop on the forecourt, which helps if a straggler lands on a later flight.
