Freiburg and the Black Forest in a Minibus
Freiburg is the gateway to the Black Forest, and its old town of narrow lanes and little street channels was made for small groups. A minibus and driver carry you from the Münster to the lakes and waterfalls.
Small groups fit the old town
With so little room between the Bächle and the house fronts, Freiburg's tourist board wants visiting groups in the old town no bigger than 25. A minibus party usually fits with one guide, while a full coach has to split into several groups.
Signposts guide coaches to two parks right beside the pedestrian zone: ten spaces on the Karlsplatz and three at the Schreiberanlage, both fine for letting passengers out. Coming off the A5, leave at Freiburg-Mitte and follow the B31a.

No sticker in Freiburg
The green sticker became unnecessary in Freiburg in spring 2025, when the city lifted its zone, so you can drive into or across town freely. One thing remains: on the B31 through town, traffic is held to 30 km/h to cut noise.

Into the Black Forest
The Schauinslandbahn valley station is about 25 minutes away; the cable car climbs to 1,284 m in about 20 minutes, but only in suitable weather, so keep a second plan. Titisee is about 35 minutes. Allow three quarters of an hour for either the Feldberg or Gutach, where the Vogtsbauernhof shows old Black Forest farmhouses in season.
Triberg and its waterfalls take about an hour, as does the cathedral town of St. Blasien. For a family day out, the drive up to Europa-Park in Rust is only half an hour.
Expect mountain driving on the B31 through the Höllental and on the climbs to the Feldberg and the Schauinsland. When roads are icy or snowy, winter tyres are a legal requirement in Germany, and the operator plans the vehicle and timing with the season in mind.
Across the border
Colmar in Alsace is about 50 minutes away; Strasbourg takes just over the hour, and its zone demands a French Crit'Air sticker, since the German Umweltplakette counts for nothing there.
Basel is about an hour away. Switzerland charges a daily flat-rate fee for buses over 3.5 t with foreign plates, parked or not, so mention Basel when you ask for a quote.
